In order to provide a standard travel insurance product with industry-wide coverage and common policy terms, IRDAI has published an Exposure Draft on Standard Travel Insurance Policy Guidelines. The standard product will have the basic mandatory coverages and will be uniform throughout the market. The Standard travel insurance policy can be purchased both as an individual product and as a group product.
Optional covers may be offered with the standard product. The premium may vary from one insurer to another as it will depend on the coverages offered. In accordance with the IRDAI note, each general and independent insurer will endeavor to offer this product from April 1, 2021.
There will be 5 variants for domestic travel and 4 variants for overseas travel.
Domestic travel variants
- Travel by any mode of public transport (within the city)
- Travel by any mode of public transport (Out of town)
- Train journey

Variants of travel abroad

Coverage of the standard travel insurance policy will be based on indemnity and benefits. The product will be offered on an individual, family and group basis.
The policy provides coverage only during the period of travel under national insurance. Both stay and travel are covered by overseas travel insurance in most plan variants.
According to IRDAI, the Indian travel market is one of the largest in the world. According to reports, around 36% of Indian households undertake trips for one purpose or another both inside and outside the country. While it is essential that every journey undertaken be a safe journey, it is necessary to make every journey a safe journey by providing an appropriate safety net.
Although there are a number of travel insurance products in India, the penetration of travel insurance has yet to take off. In addition, each product has unique characteristics and the insurance public may have difficulty in choosing an appropriate product. In order to deepen the penetration of travel insurance, which will provide a safety net for every individual who undertakes a trip, it is considered essential to have a standard travel product.
